What is slot racing? Mussel Bay Scalextric Club King's Lynn Norfolk

Start here

It's Jim, but not as we know it!

This is a typical home Scalextric set.
You have to assemble the track on the carpet.
The furniture gets in the way.
The straights are never long enough for the cars to reach top speed.
The electrics are forever playing up.
If you crash then you have to stop racing to retrieve the cars.
Your living room is usually too small to accomodate more than a couple of friends for a race.

This is proper slot racing - the cars are the same but the racing experience is radically different.
The track is semi-permanent so there are no electrical problems.
It is made of wood with copper tape instead of plastic with metal rails. This means that the magnets underneath the cars don't work - giving higher straightline speed but much trickier cornering.
The lap length is over 100ft with the straights approaching 30ft so the cars can easily reach full speed.

The races are computer timed and you will be up against three determined racers in every heat with another ten competitors waiting their turn.
We may all be friends but we race to win and nobody will wait for you if you fall off!
The "magic cranes" (track marshals) will happily put your car back in the slot when you crash but each off-track excursion will cost you half a lap.
If you fancy accelerating flat out down a long straight, judging a braking point to perfection, powering out of a tricky corner and attempting the perfect lap then why not come and join us on a Friday night?

Don't worry about lack of experience - we all started at the bottom but it doesn't take long to get the hang of things and move up the leaderboard. You will find that the other club members are only too willing to help a novice with car set-up and racing technique.
