What we race

Classic F1 – Grand Prix Masters

This non-championship class of racing is an attempt to produce fun and close races for some venerable F1 cars that ran in the World Championship between the early 1970s and early 1980s. This is the Classic Cosworth DFV period when the designers had few restrictions and cars could actually be identified by their shape rather than the sponsors’ logos they carried! The aim is to enable some old war-horses from childhood days to get a new lease of life – it is not meant to be a serious championship but just a bit of fun when we have a spare week in the calendar. A large number of these cars were produced by various manufacturers at the time, they can mostly be picked up very cheaply and, with a minimum of money and effort can be made to run quite sweetly on a modern track. They also have the advantage that there are very few bits to break unlike modern F1 cars!

The 1:1 versions can still be seen running today in the Grand Prix Masters series and the FIA historic F1 Championship

We have tried to keep the rules as simple as possible – the aim is to run
period cars in period livery with period motors. Period dress is entirely optional! Bearing in mind that these cars are over 30 years old, with all the design and quality faults of the time, a few bits will need to be modified so that they can actually complete a racing lap at a reasonable speed without breaking down!

Full rules for the class can be found here.
